COURSE OUTLINE

July 15

Class 1-- New Value Tool, High Value Key -- This is a great tool for the use of the value scale. This is especially useful if you have a subject where there is little color harmony or rather the colors “look ugly together.” It’s so effective because all pastels look great together! I will paint from a still life and a figure reference photo and work the value scale using 5 to 1. With all my shadows/darks indicated with a value 4 or 5, what happens to the range of my lights? They have to move up to a value 1, 2, or 3! It takes forcing but it creates a lovely luminosity to the work.

July 22

Class 2 -- Fashion Illustration and how it applies to the Figure -- Let’s break away for a minute and explore something that almost became a lost art. Longer, leaner figures and other aspects of fashion illustration that I use in my normal "everyday people" figures to “make them prettier”. We’ll take a look at salon portraits and figures that really were romanticized but still remained in “reality”. I’ll demonstrate a fashion figure and then demonstrate an average figure that I add a fashion attitude to.
