RAY ROBERTS DEMO #7: FEB 1, 2018

Updated: Mar 2, 2021

Ray chose to paint this morning's demo in the studio. His lesson plan was on, "understanding the importance of values." Ray repeated a quote that he often brings up in his workshops, "anything in shadow is darker than anything in light--that's what gives you form". Ray demonstrated beautifully, on a small canvas board, 3 different versions of a value plan after completing his first value sketch using black and white. Peggi chimed in, "values are like a piano keyboard, you can play all sorts of arrangements and get a multitude of feelings." Ray continued on that same thought, "PAINTING is like (playing a) a piano, you can intellectualize how it all works, but if you don't have the experience doing it, you really don't understand it, ...just as in riding a bike."

Below is the demo Ray did of a value study, an actual color study, a high key study, and a low key study. Pictured below that is his photo reference that was manipulated in photoshop to help him redesign the scene.

The LIVE demo recording was available to our participants to watch for a limited time. The viewing time has since expired. If you missed the LIVE demo, no worries--we'll have it available for purchase in our "Streaming Videos" section on our website soon.
